a) Personal Attacks & Abusive Language

Open University Media recognizes that students may use swearing to express frustration. Limited swearing is allowed, but only under controlled conditions.

Allowed (Contextual Emotional Venting)

Swearwords used to express frustration or emotion are acceptable when not used to harass real individuals, such as:

  • “This assignment is fucking useless.”

  • “My day was a complete shitshow.”

  • “That method is so damn irritating.”

  • “My groupmate acted like a bastard today.”

These are considered natural emotional expression.


Not Allowed (Sexual or Dehumanizing Insults)

Certain insults cause direct harm, especially sexual or degrading terms. These are never allowed, including but not limited to:

  • “slut”

  • “whore”

  • “hoe”

  • “prostitute” (as an insult)

  • Misogynistic slurs

  • Racist, caste-based, ethnic, or religion-based insults

  • Homophobic or transphobic slurs

These are banned universally, regardless of context.


Not Allowed (Targeted Attacks on Real People)

Even mild swearing becomes prohibited when aimed directly at a real, identifiable person:

  • Professors

  • Classmates

  • College staff

  • Public students

  • Any real individual by name, role, or clear identification
